What I do at Vision

In my role as Managing Director and GM I work to lead and motivate the team while planning long term strategies in consultation with Daryl my business partner and the other members of our senior management team. On a day-to-day basis I take care of the finances and look after the HR side of the organisation.

Previous experience

I have been involved in the consumer electronics industry since the late 70’s - back when televisions were made of wood! I strayed into working with a supplier of electronic components. By the end of the 80’s I was a registered electrical service technician servicing all manner of electronics. In the early 90’s I went into business with Daryl when the opportunity to take over the electronics side of our former employer’s business came up. Soon after SKY TV announced it was coming to Otago and the Vision story really took off. Along the way I’ve learned the ‘business of business’ by hands-on trial and error (luckily without too many errors).

Why I work at Vision

It just worked out that way… but it is a real buzz when everything comes together as it should on a job, and all stakeholders are happy. We have a great team that ensures that happens again and again….and when everyone is smiling I have done my job right.

A bit more about me

My Family, my Music and my Motorbikes make me smile.

Previous experience

I left school in 1986 at the tender age of 16 and worked for Basil North Ltd, originally as a TV aerial a radio telephone installer. This progressed onto an apprenticeship as a Radio Technician (electronics service technician). In 1991 Basil decided to sell the electronics repair side of his business. As a result Glen and I formed Vision Electronics Ltd. In 1994 we created a second company, Vision Antenna Systems Ltd, to cater for the introduction of SKY TV to Dunedin. I’ve worked with this fantastic group of people we call Vision ever since.

Why I work at Vision

Working with my business partner Glen is all I’ve known since leaving school. Glen, myself, and our awesome crew are what Vision is. People. Great people. This the main reason I come to work each day.

I like to make sure people are enjoying themselves while at work and that we are able to laugh at ourselves whenever possible. This environment enables us to reach out to our clients, get to know them and introduce technology into their lives in such a way that it really makes a positive difference to the way they live.

A bit more about me

Outside of Vision I’m married to Karen and between us we have four children. A huge part of my ‘outside of work’ time is devoted to family, especially running between four sports codes on a Saturday and coaching six year old cricket…like many parents I’m a also taxi driver.

I am also a volunteer Station Officer in the New Zealand Fire Service (I’ve been in the Fire Service since 1993). Apart from that I enjoy reading, most sports, living by the sea, helping people in need, music and catching up with mates etc.

What I do at Vision

Previous experience

Worked in electronics and aerial wholesale. After selling 100s of aerials to installation companies during the TV3 boom I saw what a vibrant industry Television reception could be - I wanted in.

Why I work at Vision

First and foremost the people. Vision has always managed to keep a great team. We work very hard but there is nothing better than having a laugh with your workmates. I also love working for proactive innovative market leaders - at Vision we’re always planning ahead for future technologies.

A bit more about me

As much time as possible is spent with my awesome family. Hobbies include gardening, fishing, duck shooting, freedom camping (as far from the world as I can get and testing my latest 12 volt portable TV) and working in my shed on ‘the next project’ … my wife says I’m a bit of a mad scientist...

Previous experience

Prior to joining Vision I lived for many years in Australia. My work experience goes from nurse aiding, waitressing and bar work to shearing sheds. Before joining Vision I worked for a short time for Fletcher homes as a hostess in a show home and then in their office.

Why I work at Vision

I enjoy it because I get to work with some amazing people. We are a great team and we like to laugh and have fun. Most importantly we care about each other. For me it’s not just about the ‘job’, but it is exciting to be involved in such a fast moving industry.

A bit more about me

I’m 53 years of age and I have a 24 year old daughter. My most favourite thing to do is to have a very chilled glass of Sav in my hand, a platter of cheese and crackers in the very great company of my friends and family. I also like to travel when I can both in New Zealand and overseas. Not my favourite things… but for fitness I do aqua jogging and walking.

Why I work at Vision

Vision has a ‘work’ ethic and a ‘quality of work standard’ I’ve always admired. I jumped at the chance to work with such a great team. We work hard to achieve good results for clients and have a lot of fun doing it. There is a comradery hard to match at other work places.

A bit about me

Previous Experience

I’m coming up to five years at Vision and six years as a Sky Technician. Prior to Vision I worked as self-employed contractor for another company covering Otago, Southland and Queenstown. I was sent where the work was and literally lived out of a suit case and hotels for a while.

Why I work at Vision

What I like about my job is ‘everything’. I enjoy the interaction with customers and socialising with team mates, whether it’s our social beer on a Friday or the ‘Relay for Life’ events. The fact I can make people lives easier on a daily basis is a great feeling. Being able to share and gain ideas with work mates is also great. And I don't mind getting my hands dirty and messing up the hair delivering the right result ;-)

A bit more about me

I spend the rest of my life raising my beautiful family with my wife, with a lot of trips to the park and kid’s events. I like to watch all kinds of sport and get along to Highlanders matches whenever possible. I also like to sit down on a Friday night and watch 7 days, For Me It's 3!

Previous experience

I applied for the job with no previous experience. I convinced the boss I was fast learner and got it. I’d previously spent 19 years in the freezing works where I started at the bottom and worked my way up to a boner/sawyer. I’d also had some building and road work experience. After 20 years or so of mainly working inside and frequently on night shift it’s great to be out and about.

Why I work at Vision

I enjoy the technical side. Also - techs like us mainly work solo but there is good back up and support from the team here.

Previous experience

I still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up. I’ve got a bit of a varied background from running my own businesses, branch manager of a removals company, tour guiding, and way back I even had a stint with local radio. I particularly enjoyed my time with Hawkins Construction during the Forsyth Barr Stadium project.

Why I work at Vision

The people. It is probably the best work place I’ve ever experienced. High expectations but a supportive environment. We’re not colleagues here, we’re mates. And we’re all quite passionate about our jobs. Everyone’s a bit of an audio nut, in fact everyone’s a bit nuts. There’s a lot of spontaneity in the office so we have a lot of fun... and they’re the only people who would employ me!

A bit more about me

I’m a late Dad and dote over a six year old son who returns the favour by running me ragged. My current interests are Thomas the Tank Engine, Angry Birds and kite flying. Next week they will have changed. Otherwise I enjoy doing whatever my wife tells me to. (I used to enjoy expensive things like motorsport and travel.) That said, my audio gear now enjoys constant upgrades, some my wife doesn’t notice. However I did have to explain why we needed a new sub recently.
